We will soon begin breeding beautiful Miniature Belted Galloway cattle. Perhaps the term 'miniature' is a bit of a misnomer. 'Miniature' generally means 'of greatly reduced size', but here it only means the animals are moderately smaller than the standard size for their breed. Our cattle are about 3/4 the height of standard Galloways.
Small is beautiful. Small cattle are easier on the land, equipment and facilities. They are much less intimidating and easier to handle. And they make great pets!
Naturally polled (hornless) Miniature Belted Galloways have many wonderful characteristics to recommend them, apart from their small size and great eye appeal. They contribute valuable traits to a crossbreeding program, too, including 100% polled calves from horned cows. Their very desirable traits include:
- Hardiness and superior foraging ability, consuming more varieties of flora than any other breed. Being non-selective grazers, they allowing paddock grasses to compete with weeds and have the ability to forage under sparse conditions.
- High disease resistance
- Adaptability to a variety of climatic conditions, their double coat of hair providing excellent insulation in cold and wet weather
- High fertility
- Easy calving and excellent mothering ability, producing enough rich milk to wean a large and healthy calf with a high calf survival rate. Galloways had the highest weaning percentage (95.5%) and the highest calf survival percentage (95.2%) in a study of 11 breeds.
- Docility
- Longevity
