Sheep at Callara
We breed Dorper sheep. With their naturally self-shedding fleece, dorper sheep have many great characteristics to recommend them, whether they be kept for land management, as pets or as lawnmowers. Their very desirable traits include:
Economical, because they have self-shedding fleece and don't need shearing, crutching, mulesing or tail docking.
- Superior foraging ability, consuming a wide variety of grasses and weeds, including fireweed! They are non-selective grazers and can improve under-utilized pastures of lesser quality.
- Adaptability to a variety of climatic conditions. They thrive in arid to semi-tropical areas from 100mm-760mm rainfall.
- Hardiness and high disease resistance
- High fertility and continuous breeding. Dorpers commonly have multiple births (twin and triplets) and they are polyoestrus (can breed continually, with no defined season). Their breeding intervals can be as short as 8 months, or 3 times in 2 years. Lambs are extremely mobile at birth, will start to graze in the first few days after birth and survival rates are high.
- Excellent mothering ability. The Dorper ewe produces a large quantity of milk, aiding lamb survival and early growth.
- Docility
