The project-based learning activities promoted at KidSolutions involve students in defining and exploring a real-world problem, purpose or aspiration, and in developing, evaluating, explaining, and where possible pursuing, a response, position or course of action in relation to that problem or intention. Learners are engaged, because the task is meaningful to them and they have a higher level of self-direction. Learning takes place out of a need to know, students construct knowledge rather than absorbing it, learning occurs in a real-world context and has value beyond the school. In solving the problem or pursuing their purpose, students develop skills of higher order thinking, creativity, independent learning and collaboration, and achieve deeper learning.

Project-based learning activities can provide a meaningful, experiential basis for the teacher-led Real World Investigations advocated in the Key Abilities Model for addessing curriculum accountabilities in a way that is relevant and engaging for students. Where generic curriculum elements can be addressed in more flexible ways, project-based learning activities and the resources here at KidSolutions provide valuable scaffolding for Personal Interest Projects, in which students play a major role in choosing and negotiating the problems and purposes for investigation, and in managing the investigations as small groups or individuals.
